Promise Activ Supershots

I’ve never been a fan of the “watery” yogurt – the kind that comes in drink form. I’ve always been a fan of the thick yogurts that are… not runny. However, I decided to give these Promise SuperShots a try when I saw them arrive at Safeway – we use the Promise fat-free spread as a margarine substitute for some time now (sometimes – we do prefer Benecol but it’s so expensive so we usually get both…), and I like to get as many plant sterols into my diet to try and reduce cholesterol.

I was shocked to find out how great these things taste – they are very flavorful. We’ve tried Raspberry, Peach, and Strawberry. Raspberry and Peach were great, Strawberry wasn’t nearly as good. The flavor is the main thing – it’s a nice strong flavor, and the drink is very nice and smooth (a milky consistency), so it’s not offputting. If it was thicker I think I might not enjoy it – but because the consistency is nice and thin it’s more of a drink than a “drinkable yogurt”.

They are a bit pricey (almost $5 for 4 of them), but that could be Safeway.

Mac and ChReese – Vegan low fat mac and cheese!

So I’ve always loved me some Kraft Mac and Cheese. But after going on a low-fat diet, it was off limits.

So recently I found this Mac & Chreese stuff (Road’s End Organics) – vegan mac and “cheese” – at Rainbow Grocery (1745 Folsom St, San Francisco). We tried the “Shells and Chreese” first and this stuff is really tasty, and low fat. I dare say it might almost taste better than the product they’re imitatin’! We made it with 1/4 + a splash of skim milk, and a bit of Promise (fat-free-margarine). And it ROCKED. It was creamy, flavorful – almost tasted like a real white cheddar on there. It didn’t have any odd, soy-ish, non-authentic after taste at all (like some of the fat-free cheese products do…)

We tried another flavor, the Mac and Chreese with the whole wheat elbow macaroni – it wasn’t quite as good as the Shells and Chreese.

But I absolutely recommend finding this stuff, especially Shells and Chreese, and trying it out. Again, we found it at Rainbow Grocery in the pasta aisle.

Nature Valley 100 Calorie Granola Bites – On your cereal!!

These little granola bites were first introduced to me in the Nature Valley cereals, which are readily available just about anywhere (Safeway, Target, you name it). I always loved the granola pieces the most, and was absolutely excstaic to find them in 100 calorie packs. This means that I can enjoy them in pretty much any cereal I want (including lower carb-higher-fiber cereals).

So every single morning (yeah, every single morning – I’m that much in a rut and that much in love with these buggers) I pour 1 pack of these things onto my oat bran (I also add a scattering of either grape nuts or Trader Joe’s high-fiber cereal). Let the granola bites soak in a little milk and they are FABULOUS.

These are one of my very favorite foods of all time. They are absolutely amazingly delicious in cereal. I have only found them at Sam’s Club (both the Concord and Vacaville locations), so I stock up on several warehouse boxes each time we drive all the way out there (and yeah, it’s about 25 miles or so to the closest one…) But they’re cheap, delicious, and worth the drive.

Check them out!! If you’re not sure, try the Nature Valley Cereal (Oats ‘n Honey or Cinnamon) – they’re identical to the small granola pieces you find in that.

UPDATE!!! The last time I went to Sams Club, I couldn’t find these large boxes of Granola Bites. However – tonight I just found them for the first time ever at TARGET. Which is actually close to my house in Daly City and/or South San Francisco. SCORE!!! Check them out in the granola bar aisle.
